What?  A free “walk in the shoes” tour  that takes interested community members through the step-by-step experiences of a typical re-entry program client from initial point of entry into Anchorage from prison, through his/her first day seeking housing, employment, and financial stability.

Why?  Continuing its partnership with the Partners Re-Entry Program, Alaska SHRM is organizing this walk to foster greater understanding, especially for employers and HR professionals, of the challenges faced by individuals integrating back into the community after release from prison. Each year more than a thousand inmates who have served their sentences are released in Anchorage, often in the parking lot of the city jail. Many go straight to a homeless shelter. Connecting re-entrants quickly with suitable housing, employment, and support services is key to keeping them from returning to prison.

Where?  Beginning promptly at 8:30 AM at the Anchorage Jail downtown, the walk will cover several stops in the downtown area, including the Partners Re-Entry Center, transitional housing, public assistance office, Bean’s Café, Brother Francis Shelter, and other points, concluding back at the Jail by 11:30 AM.

Who?  The walk is led by Cathleen McLaughlin, the dynamic Director of the Partners Re-Entry Program  in Anchorage who presented the Employing Ex-Offenders workshop for the Alaska SHRM State Council last July.  Cathleen, along with a very passionate group of individuals, is committed to reducing recidivism in Alaska. The Reentry Center is a collaborative program by the Alaska Native Justice Center, Nine Star Education & Employment Services, and Partners for Progress.

How?  If you are interested in participating, please contact Ann Flister at aflister@pndengineers.com as soon as possible to reserve a spot and obtain additional details.  SPACE IS LIMITED FOR THIS DATE, and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  There is no charge for this educational event, but optional clothing donations for the Re-Entry Center are encouraged and gladly accepted.

Interested, but unable to make it on this special SHRM date?  You may participate in any other regular monthly walks, which take place on the third Friday of each month.  Contact Partners Re-Entry Center for details.  And watch for additional SHRM Re-Entry Walks to be announced later in the year!
